When the question “what do you do for a living?” is asked in our modern society, that which is truly being asked is “how do you earn money?”. By stating it in this way the subliminal message is that the primary purpose of life is to gain material riches and everything other than that is not “living” but merely hobbies or something you do on the side.
This is a product of a materialistic society which desires always more and more. More money, more clothes, more friends, more sex... The thing with this way of being is that it only leads to more of the same because soon after our desire is met we accept it as our default and start wanting more yet again.
But what if we stopped and looked closely at the sponsoring feeling behind our constant desire for more. We find there that all we truly seek is peace and joy and we think our only way to get there is if we acquire more stuff. But peace can never be found without. To tap into our inherent joy we must conjure it up from within. It is found in our own attitude towards the world around us and not in the situations them selves.
If you are fortunate enough to have a bed to sleep in and food on your plate it might bring you happiness to stop putting so much emphasis on making a living and start making a life.
